Canada Factory Sales Unexpectedly Fall
Manufacturing sales in Canada decreased 0.7 percent over a month earlier to CAD 57.1 billion in October 2019, following a 0.2 percent drop in September and against market expectations of a flat reading. Sales fell mostly in the transportation equipment and fabricated metal product industries (-3.1 percent), namely motor vehicle assembly (-4.7 percent) and motor vehicle parts (-4.6 percent), amid lower activity at some assembly plants as well as at several parts plants which were impacted by the United Auto Workers strike in the US. Sales also went down for fabricated metal products (-8.2 percent); plastics and rubber products (-5.7 percent) and wood (-3.3 percent). In contrast, gains were recorded in the petroleum and coal product industry (6.2 percent), as several major refineries ramped up production following shutdowns and maintenance in September; and food industry (1.9 percent), mainly the result of higher sales of meat products in Alberta and Ontario.

Canada Manufacturing Sales Fall Less than Expected
Manufacturing sales in Canada decreased 0.2 percent over a month earlier to CAD 57.4 billion in September 2019, down from a 0.8 percent rise in August and beating market expectations of a 0.5 percent fall. Sales fell in the petroleum and coal product industry (-1.9 percent), motor vehicle parts (-4.3 percent); food (-1.0 percent); aerospace product and parts (-3.7 percent), electrical equipment, appliance and component (-6.8 percent) and chemicals (-1.4 percent). Sales were down in seven provinces in September, of which Alberta (-3.2 percent); Manitoba (-4.0 percent), Quebec (-0.5 percent) and Saskatchewan (-4.6 percent). Manufacturing sales declined 1.3 percent to CAD 172.0 billion in the third quarter.

Canada Manufacturing Sales Rebound in August
Manufacturing sales in Canada went up 0.8 percent over a month earlier to CAD 57.6 billion in August of 2019, rebounding from a 1.3 percent decline in the previous month and compared with market forecasts of 0.6 percent increase. Sales in the transportation equipment industry increased 2.8 percent, as sales in the motor vehicle industry rebounded (2.6 percent vs -4.6 percent in July). In addition, sales of fabricated metal products rose 3.6 percent while sales went up in the plastics and rubber product (2.8 percent) and food (0.5 percent) industries. In contrast, sales of petroleum and coal products decreased for the third consecutive month, declining 1.7 percent. Sales increased in seven provinces in August, led by Quebec (1.6 percent) and Ontario (2.3 percent).

Manufacturing sales in Canada dropped 1.3 percent over a month earlier to CAD 57.2 billion in July 2019, following an upwardly revised 1.4 percent fall in June and compared with market forecasts of a 0.2 percent decline. Sales went down in the primary metal sector (-7.3 percent), namely iron and steel mills and ferro-alloy products (-14.8 percent) due to lower quantities sold and maintenance shutdowns at some plants; and motor vehicle industries (-4.7 percent), mostly due to an extended shutdown at a major assembly plant attributable to maintenance projects to support new model production. Additionally, sales fell in the fabricated metal product (-3.2 percent); railroad rolling stock (-26.7 percent); and computer and electronic products (-6 percent) industries. Meanwhile, sales in the food sector advanced 1.3 percent, after two consecutive monthly declines, boosted by higher sales of meat in Quebec, Alberta and Ontario.

Canada Manufacturing Sales Fall the Most in 6 Months
Manufacturing sales in Canada fell 1.2 percent to CAD 58.0 billion in June 2019, after a 1.6 percent rise in the previous month and compared with market expectations of a 1.7 percent decline. Sales dropped in the petroleum and coal product industry (-3.8 percent); food (-2.5 percent), namely in meat products (-11.6 percent); machinery (-5.6 percent); paper (-5.9 percent) and chemical (-2.9 percent) industries. On the other hand, sales in the primary metal industry jumped 11.7 percent, in particular iron and steel mills and ferro-alloy (12.6 percent). Sales went down in eight provinces, led by Alberta (-6.5 percent), Newfoundland and Labrador (-17.5 percent), Nova Scotia (-12.1 percent) and Manitoba (-5.8 percent) while in Quebec increased (1 percent). Considering the second quarter of the year, manufacturing sales advanced 1.7 percent to CAD 174.5 billion.

Canada Manufacturing Sales Rebound in May
Manufacturing sales in Canada went up 1.6 percent to CAD 58.9 billion in May, rebounding from a downwardly revised 0.4 percent decline in the previous month, as sales in the transportation equipment industry increased 8.1 percent, mainly due to higher sales of motor vehicles (13.3 percent) and motor vehicle parts (7.3 percent). In addition, sales rose in the petroleum and coal product (2.0 percent), fabricated metal product (3.1 percent), chemical (2.1 percent) and machinery (1.7 percent) industries. Meanwhile, declines were recorded in the food (-1.7 percent); primary metal (-2.1 percent) and printing and related support activities (-5.6%) industries. Sales jumped in Ontario (2.7 percent to CAD 26.9 billion) and Alberta (2.2 percent to CAD 7.0 billion) but fell in British Columbia (-1.8 percent CAD 4.6 billion) and Saskatchewan (-5.1 percent to CAD 1.4 billion).
